The Live Programming Life Cycle

Chances are, if you work in the broadcast or live streaming industry, you’re familiar with something called “The live programming life cycle.” But for those that aren’t familiar with this concept, what exactly is it and why is it important to understand?

The live programming life cycle refers to the distribution methods and media processing workflows needed to develop content and get it out to your audience in a variety of viewing windows.

‘Viewing windows’ describe the phases your video content can be accessed by your audience, whether it be live streamed during an event, just missed replay, on-demand video playback, or digital syndication.

Different audiences engage with your content differently in the various viewing windows. For example, you might have someone watching an on-demand video on a mobile device where location-based ad targeting is possible, or someone who watches it on syndication where they paid a price premium to remove the ads.

So for each different viewing window, you need to consider contextualizing the content shown, such as inserting different ads for the various forms you are producing, inserting your own promos, or branding the content differently.

The Problem:

Once your live show ends, so does the ability to generate revenue from this live stream. One way to unlock additional revenue is to capture the live stream and process it for on-demand distribution or syndication. The faster you can create versions for your different viewing windows, the faster you can continue to collect additional revenue from that content. And, of course, for each viewing window, you need to contextualize your content with the most appropriate advertising, promotions and editing in order to appeal to each set of viewers in each viewing window.

All of these versions and contextualized content can be quite a task for your video production department!

The Solution:

Automation. The fastest way to start collecting on-demand revenue is to minimize the time it takes to prepare content for each viewing window on every device in the required bit rates. With automated workflows, you can set up highlight clips to be captured during the live show. Those highlights can be automatically packaged and published to social media sites to promote the live show while it is still being broadcast. Meanwhile, in your workflow, you can automatically produce optimized ABR streams with dynamic ad insertion for your just-missed-replay and VOD viewing windows. Branded versions can be made for various syndication channels. IPTV assets can be created for cable TV viewing. And, to speed this all up, all of this can happen automatically from a growing file being captured from the live event, which reduced the time between live event and your on-demand assets.
